Does topical use of Vitamin E improve scars?

No there are no benefits to using vitamin E to improve scars. According to a study conducted by the University of Miami Department of Dermatology vitamin E has no positive effect on scars. It may even worsen the scar appearance in more than 90% of the cases! One third of the patients in the study developed an allergic reaction and had to stop the use of vitamin E.

The outcome of the study: "The Effects of Topical Vitamin E on the Cosmetic Appearance of Scars" conducted by Leslie M. Baumann MD and James Spencer MD, MS is that the use of vitamin E for treating the cosmetical appearance of scars should be discouraged. Read more about this study here.
